How to inventory your stuff

Most people have far more stuff than they think, and almost none of it is documented. But creating an inventory isn't about being morbid; it's about making things easier for the people you leave behind and clearer for yourself right now.

Start with a single room and a phone. Open the Deathbedding.com app or website, and navigate to Assets. Click the Add Asset button and then use the interface to to add a photo of anything that matters with your phone, type in the name of the item and choose a category from the dropdown, and click Add Asset. You can add the other details later, either through the app or the website, including roughly what it's worth and where it lives. You don't need appraisals (a best guess is fine). The goal is a list, not an audit.

Work category by category: furniture, electronics, jewelry, vehicles, keepsakes, and the easy-to-forget stuff in the basement and garage. Don't skip the "worthless" sentimental items; those are the ones families fight over most.

Once you have a rough list, decide who you'd want each thing to go to. It may be easier to do this work on a larger screen like a laptop or tablet. You don't have to be formal about it; you just have to be clear. Documention turns a future argument into a simple instruction.
